Support the CROP Walk to Reduce Hunger
The 34th Annual CROP Walk for Dutchess County will be held on October 18, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
People from different faiths, culture and age, will join together in a sponsored walk to take a stand against hunger in our world. We will raise funds and awareness for local and global relief and development. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.
In 2000 political leaders representing 189 countries agreed on eight goals, which they hope to achieve in our world by the year 2015. The eradication of extreme hunger and poverty was the first of these goals. Church World Service is helping to meet the millennium goals through projects in 80 different countries.
Why is it so important to join in this effort to eradicate humger and poverty? Over 800 million people in our world are undernourished, meaning they do not get enough food to lead active, healthy lives. This lack of food is directly related to poverty. One of every six people in the world survive on less than a dollar a day.
Money raised by the CROP Walk is used locally, nationally and globally to help fight hunger and poverty. Last year more than 450 walkers from 48 different congregations and organizations raised $51,502 in the DCIC CROP Walk. Twenty five percent of that total was returned to three groups in Dutchess County who are seeking to feed the hungry -
Dutchess Outreach, the Beulah Baptist Church Saturday Night Soup Kitchen, and Community Action Agency.
